Job Title: Youth Advisor

Reports To: YES Program Manager

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Shifts: Tue - Sat 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Purpose:  This position is responsible for identifying and meeting the everyday needs of adolescents/youth, including housekeeping, food, shelter, security, personal hygiene, and health services.  The work involves teaching daily living skills and socially accepted behavior, and providing structure, limits, guidance and consistency to the activities of children in various treatment programs.  The work also involves participation in group and recreation activities.  This position is responsible for implementing program, policies and procedures in everyday activities.

This position demonstrates commitment to the mission, vision and values of the agency by engaging in respectful, cooperative relationships with customers (i.e. clients, employees and external stakeholders); being accountable for providing services and ensuring safety to customers while empowering customers in achieving the agency's mission. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties as assigned.)

  • Responsible for the supervision of adolescents/youth; utilizing strength based, therapeutic intervention skills to develop a positive rapport.
  • Advise, guide and role model with adolescents/youth in matters of social skills/interpersonal relationships, anger management, self-esteem, morality, daily living, self care skills, work and study skills through one-on-one and group interactions.
  • Follow agency rules, policies and procedures by administering and role modeling strength-based crisis prevention, intervention and conflict resolution skills including verbal and physical intervention as appropriate to ensure the safety of each youth
  • Adhere to agency and program emergency/safety policies and procedures to ensure safety of youth.
  • Communicate and document adolescent/youth behaviors through participation in treatment team meetings, progress notes (DAP's), communication logs, critical incidents reports, etc.
  • Supervise and/or dispense any medications; record medication documentation.
  • Provide input into and administer individual adolescents/youth treatment plans; provide opportunity for adolescents/youth to have varying degrees of control over their daily activities.
  • Monitor adolescents/youth to ensure compliance with agency rules (may include: cleanliness, personal habits and living, eating and sleeping arrangements).
  • Provide or arrange/assist with transportation and/or accompany adolescents/youth to appointments or outings.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed before leaving each shift worked.
  • Ensure the general security, maintenance and cleanliness of the facility, equipment and supplies; reporting any necessary campus or dorm repairs and issues as needed.
  • Adhere to agency rules, policies and procedures including attendance, program/ department specific procedures, workplace safety, code of conduct, social media, training requirements, and confidentiality

Youth Emergency Shelter 

  • Complete after hours intake procedures and make housing determination for youth arriving at the shelter.
  • Provide support and referral services on the agency Helpline.
  • Prepare and/or serve meals as scheduled.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  None

Education and/or Experience:  

High School diploma or GED is required.  Completion of at least 60 hours of college training with major course work in the social sciences is desirable.

One year experience with adolescents/youth with emotional/ behavioral issues required.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals and treatment plans.  Ability to write routine reports.  Ability to effectively speak before groups of clients or employees of the agency.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry our instructions furnished in written or oral form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:  Ability to interact with Email and light typing.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The physical requirements of this job includes: sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs on a regular basis; lifting up to 100lbs, pulling and/or pushing on occasion.

Residential Program Youth Advisors must also be able to perform all Safe Crisis Management (SCM) certified physical intervention techniques to provide crisis intervention and for annual certification.

Work Environment:  Located in resident buildings.   Will need to transport clients to activities or appointments.

Other:  Must be 21 years of age or older.  Must possess a valid Class E driver's license.  This employee must be able to transport clients in accordance with licensing standards.

PRN employees are part-time and work only on an as-needed/if-needed basis. PRN employees generally fill shifts left open by staff absences and normally work an irregular schedule.  PRN employees are not guaranteed a minimum number of hours or any particular shift. Rather, they are offered shifts based solely upon the needs of the Agency at the time. It is the responsibility of each PRN employee to know his/her work schedule.
